Hyperboreans
Somewhere in the darkness of the North, amongother countries and people, rested Hyperborea - invisible, the secondfatherland. To it has everybody striven not only polar travelers and explorers, but also entire nations. Where all possibilities are exhausted, we return tothe origin, the beginning. Hence, to reach the Pole or find Hypeborea - landbeyond the north wind - could become equal to discovering the lost meaning oflife. Perhaps, after all, we have already trod its sacred ground, not knowingit. An island, lost in the wasteland of the North Sea, could have been the topof the mythical Mount Meru. Shrine, such asthose seen in the distant Lapland, on the Kola Peninsula- stone burial grounds, with deer horns on the top – which have been a signpostor memory of her. Now, however, people left the North defeated, with sick eyesand crushed bodies, rejoicing the land children.
***
Here, in the wilderness of the North, meetingpeople meant the greatest fortune. There were no more French, the Germans orthe Russians - there are just people who want to engage in danger, adventure, and who are willing to help each other. It gave them value and determined theirplace. Vanity was not known to them. Scarcity did not humiliate anyone. The icywasteland of the North was the place of their beauty.
***
All of them, to the last man, were well awarethat they didn’t put themselves in danger for the trade routes nor forscientific research whose results, at the cost of life, transported through alladversity. One of the strangest human tales is the one written by the deeds andsufferings of the polar travelers, conquerors of the Pole. They were not drivenby greed or avarice. Here, in the polar circle, people lived and died only forfame.
***
In this circle Pole was the center, an invisibledestination to which people went, without asking for the price, too. Pole tothem radiated with invisible light like the one that spread around the polardawn. The rigor of the Arctic Circle did notsuffer anything vague, partial or weak. By setting foot in it again, all ofthem, in some incomprehensible way, soon became aware that this distant point, beyond the horizon, was their invisible destination. Because of that they allreturned from the North converted - not different, but fixed in what they did.The North tied them all with invisible threads - individuals, nations, andcontinents.
***
People, throughout history, have been movingfrom north to south, to warm regions and seas. This movement creates history ofcivilizations, nations and races, wars of people of the North with the peopleof the South. But, conquering everything that was to conquer, they could notsurvive in warm climates. The path of history is the path of degeneration - fasteror slower, yet equally inevitable. And they all quickly disappeared perishing, dissolving in a sea of wilderness.
Polar travelers and explorers are phenomenon ofour times. They occur only after, by overseas trips and conquests, havingreached all the points of the planet. Won not only the peaks but the valleys. There was nothing on earth that would be worth having. Their direction is nolonger South but North.
These are Hyperboreans our time, who leave thewarmth of their homes and the apparent safety of their homeland to head againto beginning of times.
